CreditEase faces a criminal investigation in Beijing after police targeted companies linked to the Chinese financial group on October 12. Founder Tang Ning and other suspects face criminal compulsory measures as investors seek repayment following a reported 30 billion yuan ($4.5 billion) suspension of redemptions.

Beijing police escalate investigation into creditEase

The Chaoyang branch of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau has announced an investigation into suspected activities involving companies linked to CreditEase. The police have identified a 53-year- man named Tang and a 51-year-old individual named Zhao as the actual controllers of the companies.

Public records show that Tang is the founder of CreditEase. However the authorities have not yet said what specific crimes are being investigated or filed charges against Tang and Zhao. Depending on the details of the case criminal compulsory measures could include detention or other legal restrictions.

This announcement comes after months of instability involving the Beijing-based group’s investment products. CreditEase was founded in 2006. Grew into a major player in wealth management, microfinance and financial technology.. China’s regulatory crackdown on the peer-to-peer lending industry significantly changed its operations.

Police are now asking affected investors to register their claims through channels. Investors can submit their documents online by mail or at police stations. Required evidence includes identification documents, investment agreements, bank statements, transaction records and any communications with the companies involved.

Authorities are also warning investors not to trust intermediaries who ask for payments in exchange, for promises of faster repayment. The investigation is still ongoing. At this time police have not said how many investors were affected or given an estimate of the recoverable assets.

Repayment Suspension Raises Insolvency Concerns

CreditEase suspended redemptions on fixed-income-style wealth management products in May. Reports put the affected products at approximately 30 billion yuan, although authorities have not independently confirmed the total outstanding obligations.

The company initially promised an orderly exit and indicated that it would develop a repayment plan within four to six weeks. But the investors still waited months after the suspension for detailed settlement conditions.

A letter of apology was apparently sent out on October 11 through the group’s applications, recognizing significant financial challenges. CreditEase blamed the situation on the deteriorating business environment, poor underlying assets and lack of available funding sources.

The letter also indicated that preliminary financial reviews raised concerns about insolvency. According to the group’s account, its liabilities could exceed available assets, while asset sales had failed to generate sufficient funds for repayment.

CreditEase said it will handle loans that’re past due look at how much money it has and try to find people who want to buy its assets. However, the company did not give a rate of recovery a set plan, for paying back money or a specific time to settle claims from investors.

The difference between preliminary results and confirmed financial results still counts. No independently audited figure establishes the final investor shortfall, and investigators have not published a comprehensive asset recovery estimate.

Yiren Digital Reports Weaker Financial Performance

The investigation has also brought attention to Yiren Digital, which is the U.S.-listed financial technology company under CreditEase. The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange with the ticker YRD. Runs businesses related to lending.

Yiren Digital has said before that it works on its own and is separate from parts of CreditEase. It also does not do wealth management. However, its financial results show that its performance has gotten worse during the quarter.

Revenue was 890 million yuan, which’s down 46% compared to the same period last year and 3% less than the last quarter. The amount of loans it helped facilitate dropped 69% compared to year to 6.3 billion yuan. This shows a drop, in lending activity.

The company reported a loss of 449.6 million yuan while the company had a profit of 357.5 million yuan a year earlier. Meanwhile cash and cash equivalents fell to 1.70 billion yuan at June 30 down from 2.45 billion yuan at the end of March.

Yiren Digital said that earnings pressure was partly caused by credit‑loss allowances. Yiren Digital said that earnings pressure was partly caused by adjustments, to legacy receivables. A fair-value loss of 97.8 million yuan also reflected declining values in digital assets and related investments.

These results show stress inside a company linked to CreditEases past.. The information that is available does not prove that Yiren Digitals losses happened directly because of the criminal investigation.

International Fintech Investments Face Renewed Scrutiny

CreditEases history of investments goes beyond Chinas lending market into financial technology and cryptocurrency companies. Old investment records connect CreditEase-backed funds to Circle, Matrixport, Figure, Archax and Poko.

These records show past connections instead of confirmed current ownership. They also do not show if the investments are still there to help with repayment or if investigators think they are important to the case.

No official statement that has been checked links the listed companies, to the suspected crimes. Their past connection to CreditEase therefore does not prove they did anything or were involved in the investigation.

The case still shows the problems investors have when financial groups mix lending, wealth management and investment activities. Different parts of the company and investment tools can have their assets and debts making it hard to find money for creditors.

For people affected by this the main thing now is to prove their claims using police processes. Investigators need to find out what the wrong actions were track the money and decide which debts can be paid back.
