MARA Holdings sent 1,000 BTC valued at about $82.8 million to Binance and Gate during the past five days, which led to new speculation about possible BTC disposals. Lookonchain, a blockchain analytics platform, noted the movements on October 19, which comes after the miner has been managing its cryptocurrency reserves to reduce its debt, run its operations and invest in infrastructure.
The deposits come after yet another significant Bitcoin move to Galaxy Digital this month. But blockchain transactions show transfer, not sales, and the motives behind the most recent transactions remains unclear.
Exchange deposits renew questions about selling
Lookinochain identified the latest transfers through wallets associated with MARA’s mining operations. The reported deposits directed 1,000 BTC toward Binance and Gate, two cryptocurrency exchanges that facilitate digital asset trading.

Exchange deposits can come before sales. They also help with trading plans. They can be used for collateral. They also support changes, in custody. MARA has not publicly explained these transactions or confirmed that it sold the deposited Bitcoin.
The latest movements follow an October 8 transaction involving 996.105 BTC worth approximately $81.13 million. That Bitcoin moved from a MARA-associated wallet to an address linked to Galaxy Digital, according to blockchain tracking reports published around October 9.
Together, the two reported transactions represent approximately 1,996 BTC, valued at roughly $164 million using the reported estimates. Nevertheless the information that is available does not show if the transfers included coins or if they led to finished sales.
Previous disposals show MARA’s treasury strategy
The company had 35,577 BTC as of June 30 which’s less than the 53,822 BTC it had at the end of December 2025. In the quarter MARA mined 2,422 BTC and sold an additional 2,213 BTC at an average price of $73,078. The company did not buy any Bitcoin during that time.
Earlier, in 2026 the miner made larger sales to increase liquidity and lower debt. In March MARA announced the sale of 15,133 BTC for $1.1 billion to help with the repurchase of convertible senior notes.
The company reported total Bitcoin sales of approximately 23,093 BTC worth $1.63 billion during the first half. Those disposals helped lower the amount of debt that was still owed. These actions also generated money that the business needed.
MARA also revealed that it will be selling opportunistic Bitcoin in 2026. It is based on the prevailing market conditions, liquidity needs, and scheduled capital expenditures.
Key figures from its reported Bitcoin activity include
- Latest exchange transfers—1,000 BTC worth approximately $82.8 million.
- Earlier Galaxy Digital transfer—996.105 BTC worth approximately $81.13 million.
- June 30 Bitcoin reserves—35,577 BTC.
- Second-quarter Bitcoin sales—2,213 BTC at an average price of $73,078.
- First-half Bitcoin sales—Approximately 23,093 BTC worth $1.63 billion.
Bitcoin-backed financing supports expansion plans
Beyond direct sales, MARA has increasingly used its Bitcoin holdings to secure financing. In August, the company arranged $600 million in additional borrowing through facilities involving Coinbase Credit and Two Prime Lending.
MARA pledged 18,750 BTC as initial collateral for the facilities. The financing could support general corporate purposes, including expenses associated with its planned acquisition of Long Ridge Energy & Power.
The proposed acquisition would give MARA access to a 505-megawatt natural gas power plant in Ohio. The company also sees potential for the site to support more than one gigawatt of computing capacity.
In the meantime, MARA is pursuing opportunities in the field of artificial intelligence and high performance computing. While this might be the case, these companies can diversify their sources of income beyond Bitcoin mining, which would require significant investments in electricity, land, and infrastructure.
This latest exchange deposits also follow wider changes in the way that MARA manages its treasury. Based on the requirements, the company can choose to sell its bitcoins or lend its assets or pledge its holdings to get funding.
Miner selling could influence market sentiment
Publicly traded miners may be more likely to be the source of large bitcoin moves, drawing attention from investors who track any signs of selling pressure. But wallet transactions themselves do not indicate whether a miner has sold or not or how it will impact market prices.
MARA’s past disposals have shown that the company has utilized the Bitcoin reserves to service its debt, which has also been utilized to pay off business operations. Expanding infrastructure plans could also help shape future capital allocation plans.
Others have made large exchange transfers as they operate their own treasuries. Lookonchain also found that Hut 8 has deposited 1,589 BTC that is valued at around $130 million on multiple exchanges for two days from 16th October.
The transactions demonstrate the need to differentiate between exchange deposits and actual sales. Investors will require additional blockchain proof or a company’s statement to prove the intentions of MARA.
So far the most recent 1,000 BTC transfer is little more than a question of whether this marks another disposal. The next movements and wallet activity from MARA should make it clear to the reader whether the movements are due to planned sales, financing etc or other treasury operations.
