Key insights
- Listing progress is not approval. Grayscale has put forward a plan for conversion, but it is still not certain that the exchange will be eligible or approved.
- Custody arrangements have changed. BitGo Bank & Trust becomes the primary custodian, while Coinbase Custody remains an additional provider.
- Derivative activity offers an incomplete signal. Rising futures open interest accompanied TAO’s price increase, but falling trading volume complicates the bullish interpretation.
Grayscale Bittensor ETF plans advanced on October 23 after Grayscale Investments filed its second amendment to the registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing outlines a proposed NYSE Arca listing under the GTAO ticker, bringing the trust closer to exchange-traded fund status while leaving regulatory and exchange approval outstanding.
The amendment sets out a route for converting the existing Grayscale Bittensor Trust into an ETF. Consequently, investors could gain exposure to Bittensor’s TAO token through conventional brokerage accounts without directly holding the cryptocurrency.
Grayscale updates its registration strategy
Grayscale’s latest filing outlines its intention to list the product under NYSE Arca’s generic listing standards for commodity-based trust shares. However, the proposed route depends on TAO meeting the applicable eligibility requirements and the exchange approving the listing.
The trust currently trades on the OTCQX market under GTAO. The idea is thus to transform an already existing investment product, not to create a new trust.
If the conversion proceeds, the fund will operate under the Grayscale Bittensor ETF name while retaining its existing ticker. However, the filing does not establish a launch date or confirm that exchange trading will begin.
Grayscale has also yet to disclose the proposed management fee or any introductory fee waiver. The information might also affect the fund’s competitiveness with other digital asset investment products as the market for cryptocurrency ETFs grows.
Custody changes and ETF operations
The amendment identifies BitGo Bank & Trust as the fund’s primary custodian, replacing Coinbase Custody in that role. Coinbase Custody will remain an additional custodian, while Coinbase will serve as prime broker.
Meanwhile, Bank of New York Mellon will continue as transfer agent and administrator. I notice that Bank of New York Mellon arrangement separates custody, brokerage and administrative responsibilities across financial service providers.
The proposed structure also outlines how investors could create and redeem ETF shares. Authorized participants would use baskets of 10,000 shares, with transactions involving TAO or cash under the applicable procedures.
This mechanism could help align the fund’s share price with its underlying holdings. In addition, exchange trading could improve access and price transparency compared with the trust’s existing OTCQX market.
However, the ETF cannot begin trading on NYSE Arca until the exchange grants approval. Grayscale also cannot currently stake the fund’s TAO holdings because the required regulatory conditions remain unmet. Any future staking plans therefore depend on resolving those restrictions.
TAO price reacts as derivatives activity grows
TAO climbed more than 3% following the filing news before surrendering part of its advance. The token traded within a reported 24-hour range of $244.91 to $255.27, with its price near $250.
Even though the volume rose, it fell 19% during the last 24 hours. This split implies that the overall price upturn was not linked to increased activity in the spot markets during the period.
According to CoinGlass data, there was also an increase in the participation of the futures markets of TAO. The total Binance and other exchanges futures open interest for aggregates rose by 4% in 24 hours, and by over 1% in the latest hour to reach $400 million.
Outstanding derivative contracts are called the open interest measures. So, an upward trend in its price does not necessarily mean traders are bullish on prices, it means they are bullish on the futures.
Other developments have also supported interest in the Bittensor ecosystem. TAO recently became available on Robinhood Chain through a Forever Money bridge built using Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol. Additionally, Bittensor introduced its Null Consensus protocol update to expand subnet capacity from 256 to 2,500 participants.
Market implications and the road ahead
The proposed Grayscale Bittensor ETF could broaden access to TAO for investors who prefer regulated investment products over direct cryptocurrency ownership. Moreover, the listing would place the trust within a familiar brokerage framework if the exchange approves its application.
Nevertheless, the filing does not guarantee approval or ensure sustained demand for TAO. The absence of disclosed management fees also leaves investors without a complete basis for evaluating the product’s eventual costs.
Developments warrant attention as the application progresses.
- Listing eligibility will determine whether TAO qualifies under the proposed exchange standards.
- The economics of the funds will be clearer once Grayscale reveals the management fee and terms for its funds.
- Volume in the spot market, futures positioning and price action will be needed for market confirmation.
